Shopping

Groceries

Pembroke Dock

Pembroke Dock

A large Cemetery Junction size Coop in Kilgetty, . It used to have a depressive feel  but has recently undergone remodelling. There is a  bonus of a massive car park which in Reading would have been turned into hundreds of executive homes.

SA68 0YA (1½ miles) W3W

Saundersfoot has a Tesco Express (this  is our preference over the expensive Spar).

Opposite the  Wisemans Bridge Inn. you will spot a tiny community shop. It seems to have  random opening times but ideal if all you like is Batchelors soup, Pot noodles, or read Women’s Weekly. Good place to get beach toys.

Four Seasons Farm Shop  Amazing selection of fresh food. Onions the size of grapefruits. But not Aldi prices - we paid nearly £10 for a bag of cherries – they were very nice.

3 miles west along the A478 W3W

Pembroke Dock

Pembroke Dock

Pembroke Dock

Pembroke Dock (11 miles) has bigger shops including Aldi, Tesco (also petrol), Asda (petrol), Lidl.

There is a Sue Ryder charity shop, Argos, B&M and Screwfix 😃

Carmarthen

Pembroke Dock

Carmarthen

Carmarthen (25 miles) is a big town with a very large Tesco (petrol), Morrisons (petrol), Dunelm, B&Q, etc.

Narberth

Haverfordwest

Carmarthen

Arberth Narberth (5 or 6 miles) is great small town for shopping for gifts and clothes.

There is a large car park

Moorfield Road, SA67 7AG W3W

Tenby

Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest

Inside the old walls every third shop is a chip shop but it has zillions of others including Fat Face, Mountain Warehouse, etc. (Jo and Jon inform there is not a Fat Face but there is a White Stuff).

Our preferred parking is Five Arches P&D. Second best is the Sea Front Car Park. In fact we always go here when Tenby is busy. Tip - spaces tend to be on the right of the car park as you drive in. We steer clear of the multi-story urinal at all cost but sometimes it cannot be avoided.

For coffee and cake recommend Caffé Vista (yes funny spelling) along Croft Street overlooking North Beach near the top. If you’re lucky you could get a table overlooking the sea and beach.

Talking of beaches, Tenby has been awarded best in Britain.

A walk around Castle Hill is fun and can be bracing, take a look at the lifeboat.

Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest (18 miles) the county town of Pembrokeshire. Don’t bother to get lost negotiating the incredibly steep narrow one-way streets where the driving style is 20 mph above the speed limit as close as possible to the vehicle in front, go straight to  Perrot’s Road car park, the fact it costs 50p an hour tells you it is a sad town that has suffered badly from the many economic recessions - no doubt compounded by the soporific minor chords from Welsh choirs. Even the road names are depressing such as Dark Street. Goat Street is an exception to this rule.

After feeding the meter head to Old Bridge , which is actually a road with a foot bridge, with Costa, Coffee1 and Clarks (and a shut Wilkos), then over the bridge to guess where? Bridge Street which is an endless row of charity shops to while-away a rainy morning, some highlights are:

No 32. The Sheep Shop from table mats to woolly mits everything sheepy is sold here that will be loved by your grandmother. They also sell puffins.

22. Army Surplus store a treasure trove of random things. Perfect for finding that unique a birthday pressie for a student relative or son-in-law, or second hand DM’s for all ages especially the mother-in-law.

7. Spitfire Museum not so much a museum more a charity shop raising funds for vets (veterans not veterinarians).

2. Ramsdens Jewellery, couple of doors from Poundland. Looking for a last-minute gift for a well healed retired gent? then a sparkly watch for £350.00 will be just the thing. Read the price tag carefully - it is actually £35,000!

Petrol

Parking

Petrol

Petrol is generally cheaper in Pembrokeshire than Reading. Consistently cheapest is Tesco and Morrisons in Carmarthen followed by Tesco and Asda in Pembroke Dock.

It’s worth keeping an eye out for the Shell down the road from the Kilgetty Coop which holds a one-off record for the cheapest ever.

M&S

Parking

Petrol

M&S for those who can’t do without their (at least) weekly fix, the nearest ones are Carmarthen and outside Haverfordwest.

Parking

Parking

Parking

Most car parks use pay by phone app. (notable exceptions are Saundersfoot Pier and Coppet Hall) Parking is cheap compared to Reading – and occasionally even free!. One downside is mobile signals are non-existent in some remote spots - makes you wonder who decided on this. P&D machines tend to flip back into Welsh if you pause for more than a couple of seconds, a perygl you have to get used to.
